From Steel to Finished Mold: Understanding the Manufacturing Timeline

Understanding the mold manufacturing process helps you set realistic expectations. A typical injection mold project in China follows: design and DFM (1-2 weeks), material procurement (1 week), CNC rough machining (1-2 weeks), heat treatment (3-5 days), CNC finishing and EDM (1-2 weeks), fitting (1 week), mold trial (2-3 days), and final inspection.

For a standard production mold, total lead time is 4 to 8 weeks depending on complexity. Rush orders (2-3 weeks) are possible with a premium. The most common delay occurs during design review, especially with multiple DFM revision rounds.

Many buyers don't realize the mold design phase is where the factory adds the most engineering value. A good Chinese mold maker will suggest improvements that reduce cycle time, improve part quality, or extend mold life.
